Paul is regarded as the greatest missionary of the Christian era

Paul is regarded as the greatest missionary of the Christian era yet after preaching the gospel fervently for over thirty years he wrote the following words to Timothy; “You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me” (2Timothy 1:15 )

If Paul’s congregations could become indifferent to his passion for Jesus and his preaching of the gospel it has to be asked what does it take to get people of religion to remain focused on Jesus. Those who rejected Paul continued to worship God and they maintained their enthusiasm for a “Jesus” religion but somehow were disconnected from the Jesus Paul was preaching. It was not that for them Christianity was out of favour, it was just that they had their own version of it.

If you read the writings of Tertullian who was a fervent preacher of the gospel, and I would say a man of honour, you will find that within sixty years of the death of John mainstream Christianity no longer believe in the eternal pre-existence of Jesus. And after that things only went from bad to worse before there was an attempt to restore the gospel in the sixteenth century. We cannot say that the reformation was a failure but there is compelling evidence that both Calvin and Luther at some point abandoned sola scriptura and became preoccupied with defending their own traditions.

For many today the sixteen century reformation has become a parking lot and the irreducible standard for orthodoxy. The faithful are those who agree with the reformers and the heretics are those who do not. In the Adventist version of traditionalism the pioneers have all the say and even Paul must conform to the twenty eight Fundamental Beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Having often listen to Adventist fundamentalists I am happy to announce my heretical status.

The hope is that one day we will discover the Jesus many of us have never known. I am not being arrogant, I was an Adventist for many years before I learnt who Jesus really is. I am a fanatic at doing research but I have come to know that our cognitive potential does not get us to where we need to be. The knowledge that saves comes only by a heavenly disclosure that requires a disposition of entire submission before it is given. Jesus is waiting to give you a disclosure of Himself, you should make it your business to receive it.

“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on Me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for Him as one grieves for a firstborn son.” (Zechariah
